The Grande Yellowhead Public School Division is welcoming a new, home-grown educator into the division’s top leadership position.
Starting July 1, Hinton’s Kurt Scobie will continue his career’s upward trajectory when he officially begins his role as GYPDS’s superintendent of schools and chief education officer.
“I have spent my career in Grande Yellowhead working with leaders, staff and families to support the learning of our students,” Scobie said. “I am ready to lead this school division with integrity, innovation and a deep commitment to excellence.”
Scobie comes directly from a post as principal of Harry Collinge High School in Hinton. He has also been the top administrator at the other two GYPSD schools in that community (École Mountain View and Crescent Valley Elementary), before which he worked for 10 years in Grande Yellowhead’s central office, managing the technology department and organizing professional development for staff. Scobie began his career as an educator in 1994, mostly teaching Grade 6 and 7.
GYPSD board chair Dale Karpluk expressed her excitement for the board’s new hire.
“Mr. Scobie is a gem we found in our own backyard,” Karpluk said. “He has consistently prioritized student learning and relationship building as keys to success.”
Karpluk said she and her fellow trustees are grateful for Dr. Dennis Parsons’ steady hand at the helm during his stint as interim superintendent, which commenced last October.
