Avalanche professionals broadcast caution of “highly problematic” snowpack
A special public avalanche warning (SPAW) has been issued for BC and western Alberta.
On February 29, Avalanche Canada said that recent, significant snow storms across Western Canada, deposited on prominent weak layers established in early February, has prompted local authorities to release the special warning.
The snowpack has “highly problematic layers that remain reactive,” according to Avalanche Canada forecaster Tyson Rettie.
“This has been the biggest storm of the season, and we know backcountry users are eager to enjoy the snow,” said Rettie. “But it’s vital to not underestimate the instability of these weak layers. Any avalanche triggered on them could be deadly.”
The special warning is targeted at backcountry users across Western B.C. and Alberta and will be in effect until at least the end of Monday, March 4. Human-triggered avalanches are likely and making cautions terrain choices will be an important strategy for all backcountry users over the next few days, Avalanche Canada says.
